According to the Palm Beach Post, Serena Williams was clocked last weekend on South Florida’s I-95 driving somewhere in the neighborhood of 86 miles per hour. The only problem for Williams is that the posted speed limit for that section of highway is 65 mph. (Well, there is another problem of her speeding ticket, for $281, being posted online; thanks, Sunshine laws!)
But the tennis star is just one of many celebrities and athletes caught flying down our nation’s highways and byways. Here are five of our favorite recent celebrity speeding tickets.
The reality TV star got herself, and an over-eager photographer in a legal jam a few years back when she tried to outrun the paparazzi on U.S. 101 in Los Angeles. Kardashian claimed she was being chased, and at least three cars stopped to snap pictures as she was pulled over. One of those drivers, Juliano Goncalves, was ticketed himself for stopping in a nonemergency situation.
The Biebs is no stranger to law enforcement at this point, but back in 2012, the singer clocking 100-plus on that same 101 in L.A. was big news. And considering the speed limit was just 55 mph along that stretch of highway, Bieber was in for a big fine as well.
Proving he’s fast in and out of the water, the Olympic legend was clocked going 84 in a 45 inside Baltimore’s Fort McHenry Tunnel. Hopefully all those gold medals helped his case more than that previous DUI in Maryland.
Proving he’s fast on and off the track, the NASCAR legend was clocked going 83 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. We know these charges are automatic, but is it really reckless if it’s a professional driver behind the wheel?
It was not so much the speeding ticket itself, but one East Texas judge’s handling of the matter that made this a favorite. “It appears that even though the OU (Oklahoma) defense couldn’t stop him,” Judge Lee Johnson said on Facebook, “the Ennis PD is a different story altogether. Gig ’em indeed.”
