About Richard

A graduate of Boston University Law School in 1976, Mr. Kaufman was felony trial counsel with both the Massachusetts Defenders Committee and Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office receiving an appointment as Confidential Law Secretary to State Supreme Court Justice Melvyn Tanenbaum in 1983, where he served for 5 years, participating in such landmark decisions as Baby Jane Doe v Stonybrook University Hospital.

From that depth and breadth of experience the Law Office of Richard J. Kaufman (now Richard J. Kaufman, P.C.) was established in 1988 on Main Street in Port Jefferson, New York where it remains today 30 years later.

Criminal Law

As an experienced criminal law attorney, Mr. Kaufman has provided defense in criminal matters ranging from complicated forensic murder cases, drug charges, DWI, DUI, arson, sex crimes and white collar crimes to shoplifting, suspended license and traffic offenses.  He has represented such clients as the nationally covered environmental terrorist, the Manhattan businessman accused of counterfeiting millions of dollars of designer products and the car dealership owner involved in the theft of a half billion dollars from General Motors Corporation.

Civil Litigation

Mr. Kaufman has extensive experience in transactional real estate, commercial and corporate matters and has represented major Long Island companies, including several of the Island’s largest private waste disposal firms and technology firms and several prominent national figures. The firm also practices extensively in the Surrogate’s Court having handled estate administration, kinship proceedings and probates in Suffolk, Nassau, Queens and Kings Counties. The practice is proud of the substantial volume of residential and commercial real estate matters which it handles.

Transactional Law

Leadership, Membership & Honors

Mr. Kaufman is a member of the New York State and Suffolk County Bar Associations, and a former President of the Suffolk County Criminal Bar Association (2003-2004). Over the years with the support of qualified staff and affiliated counsel, the firm has established a reputation as a regional practice regionally while still remaining responsive to the local community.

Mr. Kaufman is admitted to practice law in the state courts of New York and Massachusetts and in the Federal Court, Eastern District of New York.
